Simplicity – Day Eighteen

What does one really need in life?

This question has been coming up for me a bit lately, and I’m curious as to what others think. The answers that I’ve come up with would be our bare necessities, food, water, shelter, etc. Though, I would also argue that there are more needs we have than just this. When looking for what those are, I would shy away from simply adhering to something like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, while it provides a good starting point.

This is because every need besides those required to function as a human being is personal. And while it is hard to find our personal needs, they do exist. And though they exist, they are oft-ignored for the sake of other, unnecessary things. I find that, for me to really live my life, I need to write. I need to sing. I need to meditate, I need to take time out my day for self-reflection. When I’m doing these things, I am happy. When I am focusing on things that are unnecessary, I find my energy drained and my life less enjoyable.

It took Simplicity to see this. And, I’m still only just starting to notice where I’m looking for the unnecessary in life. There are, however, areas where I’ve successfully practiced Simplicity consistently and I’ve noticed that when my life is Simple, I find myself happier. Because then I’m focusing on how I can grow as a happy and healthy human being. As with anything though, the process to get there takes time and dedication.

But, it is possible. If we take things step by step, finding our way in life while looking at things with a Simple mindset, I think everything becomes really beautiful. Everything becomes majestic and gorgeous and imbued with a primal life-force that we cannot help but smile at.

This, my friends, is life. It is Simple in so many ways. And, in the ways it is complex, when we apply a Simple mindset to it all we find that there is so much to see, with so little to look for.

As always, this is a place of respect and of acceptance of ideas, with the opportunity for constructive discussion. I encourage posting a comment, or even just doing self-reflection and journaling about these ideas.

So that we may all become better people.

Until tomorrow.
